WORK IN SCHOOLS AND YOUTH CLUBS
Dechen has been working in schools for 15 years.
ART
Dechen has taught art in various styles in many school in Somerset and Dorset.
Developing skills:
Social interaction, literacy and numeracy, creative skills, decision making, whilst having fun.
Dechen Chodron was sponsored by the league of teachers to study Aboriginal art in Australia. Dechen spent time with the local people studying the art.
BOOKING A WORKSHOP
SUBJECTS
ABORIGINAL ART:
Hands on experience of creating a large group picture or smaller individual pictures based on an Aboriginal story, the culture and their language.
Symbols from the Aboriginal culture are painted onto a canvas by the children, using artistic techniques, to create a story.

NATIVE AMERICAN
Native American art uses Symbols, which relate to different tribes, this is explained and then drawn by the children. This work is more detailed so pencils and crayons are used.
Land art is also available creating a symbol from the culture.

AFRICAN ART
Dechen enables the children to experience the animals of Africa through art creating large or small pictures. The children each create an African pattern with the Animal of their choice.

EGYPT
Dechen has travelled and danced in Egypt. Visiting the Ancient tombs and witnessed the amazing art works.
A video is available of some of the art works plus footage from a hot air balloon over the Nile River of the Ancient Karnac temple and local village life.
The children draw the Egyptian Hieroglyphics and learn of the Ancient language learning about her colourful gods and goddesses.

TIBETAN TANKER PAINTING
Dechen has travelled to the Far East and practised Tibetan Buddhism for 25 yrs.
Dechen and colleagues have recently set up a charity to help a school for Tibetan children, who have been made orphans due to political issues with china. www.siddharthafoundationuk.org
Dechen offers:
Storytelling of the first Buddha Siddhartha along with creating an artwork of this story.
Understanding Tibetan Tanker paintings by drawing and colouring.
Photographic exhibition of the Tibetan culture.

A visit to your school, by a Tibetan Larma teaching about the culture and Buddhism. (This is only available at certain times.)

I have had a fantastic two weeks that ended on a real high.......I now really know what my beliefs for educating the whole child and developing school ethos are. Seeing the success of my beliefs in the faces, excitement and enjoyment of the children, as well as the work produced, made me very proud. Trusting that you must stick to what you believe in is so important. It is only when you really believe in yourself that you can believe in other things.......... Even fairies!

MURALS
Creating a mural involves developing skills:
Social interaction, fun, literacy and numeracy, creative skills., decision making.
1. Deciding on a theme.
2. Brainstorming session.
3. Dedicating a space
4. Mapping it out with the clients
5. Allowing a specific time period to create it.
6. Ending the project with a celebration.

DANCE & PERFORMANCE
Dechen teaching involves developing skills:
Social interaction, fun, literacy and numeracy, creative skills., decision making.
Creative dance and movement, exploring spatial awareness,
Group sharing, body awareness, character dance, group choreography.
EGYPTIAN DANCE
Egyptian dance and performance, this involves warm up movements learning, basic techniques, and veil work. The children work towards a performance, following a storyline.
Dechen works creating the story into dance and theatre
Adrian Beckingham, works with half the children teaching storytelling techniques whilst Dechen creates the dance into story.
This we perform in front of the parents at the end of the day.
Dechen is available for storytelling, dance, and drama workshops.
EGYPTIAN DRUM AND DANCE WORKSHOP
A performance of the dance to the drum and mandolin. Encouraging the relationship between the drum and dancer, working together from the heart.
The workshop participants are then asked if they want to drum or dance.
The dancers learn the principles of the movements and experience dancing with the veil.
The drummers learn to listen and play the rhythm.of the drum.
The final result is when the dancers and drummers come together to feel the heat beat.

MENTAL HEALTH ART COURSES
Involve developing skills:
Social interaction, fun, literacy and numeracy, decision making creativity, relaxation. Meditation.
An experiential journey into oneself through the medium of art.
Looking at your world now and in the past. A creative journey-making mind maps, setting achievable goals and working with positive thinking.
